Padilla Pitches Rangers Past M's

(Newser) – Vicente Padilla allowed two hits over seven innings to outpitch Erik Bedard and Milton Bradley homered as the Texas Rangers beat the struggling Seattle Mariners 2-0 Wednesday night. Bradley hit his fourth home run in the sixth and scored both runs. Brandon Boggs had a run-scoring triple in the fourth.

Padilla (5-2), who has won three straight starts, walked two and struck out a season-high eight. He has allowed just one run in his last three starts, spanning 21 2/3 innings. He lowered his overall ERA to 3.02.Mariners starter Erik Bedard (2-2) allowed two runs on six hits in his seven innings. Padilla opened the game by hitting Ichiro Suzuki but he didn't allow him to advance past first.

    Cubs' Soto, Rays' Longoria Named Top Rookies Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto and Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria were named the rookies of the year today in the National and American leagues, respectively. Soto, 25, was voted an All-Star Game starter and finished the season with a .285 batting average, 23 home runs, and 86 RBI, the Tribune reports. He easily beat out Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto.

    The Philadelphia Phillies edged Tampa Bay 4-3 tonight to capture the team's first World Series pennant since 1980. Pedro Feliz singled home Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and provide the winning run, the Tampa Bay Tribune reports. The two teams had to resume the game in the sixth inning tonight after it was halted because of rain Monday night.
