Mayor Vows to Fill SF With Electric Cars

Electric outlets to be as common as cable cars

(Newser) – The streets of San Francisco might not be paved in gold, but they'll soon be clogged with electric cars if Mayor Gavin Newsom has anything to say about it. Newsom is in talks with Project Better Place to fill the city with electric car charging stations, a move that could push the technology into the mainstream. “It would be terrific if this happened,” said a Plug-In America co-founder.

Project Better Place is already planning similar networks for Israel and Denmark, but the San Francisco rollout would introduce the tech to the US, just as fully-electric cars become widely available. Nissan plans to have fully-electric cars in California by 2010, and thinks development would accelerate if the city was wired. But hold the champagne: Newsom might have trouble sealing the deal, given ‘Frisco’s oft-frustrating politics.

The Board of Supervisors out-voted the veto and saved the law barring all fast-food restaurants from handing out toys with meals—unless they reduce fat and sugar. Mayor Gavin Newsom said the measure "goes too far," and that parents, not the city, should determine what their kids can eat, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Backers say the law, which will take effect in a year, "holds the fast-food industry accountable for creating healthier choices for our kids," said a city supervisor. More»

Nissan's Leaf: 99MPG (!?)

Feds: Electric car will average $561 a year in electricity

(NEWSER) - So the Nissan Leaf's efficiency technically isn't measured in gallons, but the feds say it's running at the equivalent of 99 mpg, reports the AP —106 city and 92 highway. The EPA says the Leaf can go about 73 miles on a full charge (that's down from Nissan's estimates of 100 miles) and run an average $561 a year in electricity. More»

Nissan's Electric 'Leaf' Will Be $33K

Car will be cheapest all-electric on the market

(NEWSER) - Nissan has announced a price for the Leaf, its all-electric car due at the end of the year. The Leaf will be available for $32,780, meaning most US citizens can get one for $25,280 after applying the Obama administration's $7,500 tax credit for electric cars. That puts it in the price range of its main rivals, the gas-run Honda Civic ($22,255) and the hybrid Toyota Prius ($25,830), reports the Los Angeles Times . More»
