Bullets Hit LA Police Chopper, Force Landing

Pilot gets down safely; cops questioning several suspects

(Newser) – Two bullets struck a Los Angeles sheriff’s helicopter and forced it to make an emergency landing, the Los Angeles Times reports. Noone was hurt. The chopper was on its way to investigate a robbery when bullets hit its belly and tail, apparently from a high-powered rifle. Several men have been detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made.

"We believe this is not an isolated case," said one deputy. "The people responsible for this are intent on killing our officers."

(NEWSER) - Two men were killed last night on separate coasts after shots were fired in or close to the Occupy Oakland and Occupy Burlington encampments. Protesters clashed with police as cops tried to close part of the Vermont camp, and local politicians were calling for the California protest site to also be shut down. Six shots were fired in a gunfight at an Oakland BART station near the camp in the early evening. An Occupy Oakland spokesman said the dead man did not appear to be part of the protest movement, but may have hidden out in the camp before he was shot dead. "I have been very vocal on the fact that this cannot continue," City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente told ABC7 News . "I think fear has become a reality. They should pack up and leave—if not, we should take whatever action is necessary." More»

Judge May Order Lohan Back to Slammer Today

Prosecutors want her behind bars for blowing off community service

(NEWSER) - Prosecutors are out to put Lindsay Lohan back behind bars after she blew off her community service . Lohan has never shown up at an LA coroner's office, where she was supposed to work 120 hours, and rarely appeared at a women's shelter, where she was required to put in 360 hours. The time was mandated as part of Lohan's probation on a drunken driving and theft charge. "She was terminated from the women's center program for failing to show up. This was one of the terms of her probation. So we will seek jail time for her," a spokesman for the city attorney told the Los Angeles Times . More»

Rand Pulls Pot-Crime Study After LA Complains

It suggested that dispensaries reduced crime

(NEWSER) - Backers of medical marijuana got a surprise victory a few weeks ago in the form of a study from the Rand Corp . Researchers concluded that after Los Angeles authorities shut down hundreds of dispensaries last year, crime actually increased around the closed facilities. The victory proved short-lived: Rand has pulled the controversial study for review after the LA city attorney and other officials demanded its retraction, reports the Los Angeles Times . More»

2 USC Students Shot at Party

Thief opens fire near campus: cops

(NEWSER) - Two students from the University of Southern California were shot at a party near the USC campus yesterday. Several students confronted a man who appeared to be stealing items from an apartment complex where the party was taking place. He opened fire, shooting a male student in the chest and a female student in the hand, said police. The male student underwent surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition. There have been no arrests yet, reports the Los Angeles Times . More»
