(Newser) – Ted Kennedy didn't miss the start of the sailing season, despite his recent diagnosis of brain cancer, reports the Boston Herald. The senator made a surprise decision to compete in the last leg of the Figawi regatta off Cape Cod, and guided his schooner into second place. Family and friends said Kennedy was his usual self—and is looking forward to competing next year.

"It couldn’t be a more beautiful day,” Kennedy said after the race. “We have wonderful friends and family. It’s a tradition out here and we had a great day.”
