Man Sues Delta for Ruined Vacation

Delays, lost luggage, rude staff spoiled mom's 80th birthday

(Newser) – A furious lawyer is suing Delta airlines for $1 million for turning a dream trip to Argentina for his mother's 80th birthday into a nightmare, Reuters reports. "Obnoxious and incompetent" airline staff refused to allow the man and his family onto a connecting flight from Atlanta, so it took them three days to get to Buenos Aires and another five to be reunited with their bags, according to the suit.

The "elderly mother was a mess, and she has been suffering ever since. The kids are all upset. And it was Christmas Eve," the lawsuit states. Half of the vacation was spent "chasing down Delta and its incompetent representatives,"

(NEWSER) - An engineering professor from the University of Utah was busted on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City on Saturday after a fellow passenger sent a message to alert police that he was viewing child pornography on his laptop, according to investigators. A passenger behind Grant Smith in the first-class section took a photo of what appeared on Grant's computer, and emailed it to a relative with a message to contact police, reports the Boston Globe . Grant was arrested at Logan Airport in Boston, and investigators found "disturbing images of child pornography" on his computer, said a police spokesman. Airline blames 'network connectivity'

(AP) - United Airlines said Saturday that a computer glitch that grounded flights nationwide and left some passengers stranded overnight had been fixed. The airline blamed the problem on "a network connectivity issue" and said it was in the process of resuming normal operations. But the airline also indicated passengers may experience some delays for the rest of the weekend. More»

(NEWSER) - Apparently, cursing can get you kicked off a plane—as a Brooklyn man found out the hard way yesterday. After a layover in Detroit, Robert Sayegh and the rest of the passengers on Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 5136 had been waiting at the gate for 45 minutes. A flight attendant overheard him commenting to his seatmate, "What's taking so (expletive) long to close the overhead compartments?" The plane taxied to the runway, but then returned so police could escort Sayegh off. More»

The 19-year-old recently adopted a stray dog in Mexico, then tried to fly home to Canada with him. But when he landed, he discovered that the dog, a Dachsund/Jack Terrier mix named Paco, hadn't made the trip, ABC News reports. Delta said the dog was safe in Mexico, and would be along soon. More»

Computer Glitch Causes Nationwide Flight Delays

Planes in the air not affected

(AP) - A problem with the FAA system that collects airlines' flight plans has caused widespread flight cancellations and delays across the US today. An FAA spokeswoman says she doesn't know how many flights are being affected or when the problem will be resolved, but the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest airport, has been particularly affected. AirTran had canceled 22 flights and dozens more flights were delayed as of 8am EST. Delta Air Lines also has been affected. More»
