Warriors aim arrows at aircraft

(Newser) – One of the last remaining Amazon tribal communities yet to have contact with the outside world has been photographed from the air, reports the BBC. The photos show startled, red-painted tribesmen aiming arrows at the aircraft overhead. Members live in thatched huts near Brazil's remote Peruvian border. More than half the world's 100 uncontacted tribes live in Brazil or Peru. Brazil's government took the photos as part of a push to protect the tribes.

Travel writer John Gimlette, for one, was, but writing for the Telegraph, he can't help but be a wee bit cynical. After all, "it’s hard to believe that these days an entire society can be truly 'lost' for long." (NEWSER) - Brazil has released photographs of a tribe living deep in the Amazon in an effort to draw attention to their plight. Tribespeople who've had virtually no contact with the outside world, some painted with vegetable dye and brandishing bows, are seen looking upwards at a government plane. The tribe lives near the Brazil-Peru border, and Brazil warns that illegal logging on the Peruvian side is forcing indigenous people to flee across the border, the Telegraph reports. More»

Peru Struggles to Shield New 'Lost' Tribe

Rousted by logging and aircraft, members clash violently with outsiders

(NEWSER) - Peruvian officials are struggling mightily to shield one of the last "lost" tribes of its jungles. Members of the mysterious Mashco-Piro clan have been spotted along the banks of a southeastern jungle river popular with ecotourists. In two instances, tribe members have fired arrows at people in the area, including a forest ranger who was badly wounded, and a Matsiguenka Indian who was killed, even though he had long maintained a relationship with tribe members. But they have also been asking for tools from passing tourist boats and cargo vessels. Now authorities have prohibited boats from going ashore in the area. Officials believe tribe members, long isolated with no contact with outsiders, may have been rousted from their usual jungle homes by increasing logging activity in the area and low-flying aircraft involved in natural gas and oil exploration, reports the AP. Brazil Finds New Tribe in Amazon

These 200 people have had no contact with outside world

(NEWSER) - A never-before-seen indigenous tribe living in the Amazon rainforest has been revealed by aerial photographs, the latest such tribe to be discovered in the wilds of Brazil. The group, believed to contain about 200 people, has never had any contact with the outside world, the Telegraph reports. The settlement, which is located in the Javari valley, near Brazil’s border with Peru, includes straw huts and plantings of corn, bananas, and what look like peanuts and other crops. More»
