Schilling One Out From No-No

Ortiz solo homer is enough as Boston squeaks by Oakland, 1-0

(Newser) – Shannon Stewart hit a single with two outs in the 9th to blight Curt Schilling's bid for the first no-hitter of his career in Oakland. The Boston righty/blogger shook off his catcher's call for a slider and threw a fastball outside to the A's outfielder, who had been fooled outside all game.

Schilling had to settle for his third career one-hitter. David Ortiz scored the only run of the third game of the series, with a solo shot in the first inning. Oakland barely lost its own bid—for its first sweep of the Red Sox since 1932, when the club was located in Philadelphia.
