Medical examiner still mum on killing of David Jacobs' girlfriend

(Newser) – Convicted steroid dealer David Jacobs’ death has been ruled a suicide, the Dallas Morning News reports. Authorities say Jacobs, 35, shot himself in the stomach and head. Officials also found some 150 containers of steroids in his Texas home. The medical examiner has not yet explained the death of Jacobs’ girlfriend, whose body was found with his, apparently shot several times.

Jacobs had given authorities the names of his clients, including police, bodybuilders, and NFL players. He had threatened to kill his girlfriend, bodybuilder Amanda Jo Earhart-Savell, if she ever left him, those close to the couple said. “If she looked the other way, he'd get into it with her,” said a muscle-magazine editor who knew Jacobs.

(NEWSER) - When a social worker brought Josh Powell's sons for their final, deadly visit, she heard Powell tell the two excited little boys he had a "big surprise" for them—so they rushed into his home, where he quickly killed them. "He caught my eye, his shoulders were slumped. He had a sheepish look," social worker Elizabeth Griffin-Hall told 20/20 . "He just shrugged his shoulders and slammed the door." Once inside, Powell attacked the boys with an ax and torched 10 gallons of gasoline he had purchased to blow up his Washington state home, say authorities. (NEWSER) - Eight US soldiers have been charged in the death of Danny Chen, a 19-year-old private who appeared to have fatally shot himself Oct. 3 in a guard tower in Kandahar, the Washington Post reports. It’s unclear if the soldiers have been charged with actually killing him, or of driving him to commit suicide—one military official told his family in October that fellow soldiers had berated him with ethnic slurs and physically abused him. The charges leveled include dereliction of duty, making a false statement, assault, negligent homicide, and reckless endangerment. More»

Timothy, Ramie Marie Grimmer killed after mom fails to get food stamps

(NEWSER) - The second of two kids shot by their suicidal mom in a Texas welfare office has died, reports AP . Timothy Grimmer, 10, died of his wounds a day after his 12-year-old sister, Ramie Marie. Their mother, Rachelle Grimmer, apparently snapped when she failed to get food stamps to feed her family, and shot both kids and herself. She died at the scene. Chillingly, a fearful Ramie Marie posted on her Facebook page shortly before the shooting, "May die 2day," and added: "Tear gas, seriasly." More»

(NEWSER) - The accepted explanation for Vincent Van Gogh's death may be all wrong. While the standard story is that the artist shot himself in a field, managing to return to a nearby inn before he died, a new 900-page book paints a very different picture. In Van Gogh: The Life, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith postulate that a local teenager shot Van Gogh, likely accidentally, the Telegraph reports.
