(Newser) – A family of Czech cannibals is on trial for hacking off pieces of a 7-year-old boy who survived the ghoulish abuse, the Sun reports. The horror unraveled last year when a neighbor’s baby monitor picked up images of the chained-up boy meant to be seen by the boy's mother.

The partially skinned boy and his 9-year-old brother were also burned and whipped. Also involved in the abuse was a 34-year-old posing as an adopted 13-year-old sister. The imposter, the boys’ mother, and other relatives are members of the Grail Movement cult and claim its leader coordinated the abuse using text messages.

Their stepmother, Heather Leavell-Keaton, is accused of binding the children with duct tape and stuffing socks in their mouths. She allegedly kept Natalie in a suitcase for 14 hours, and strapped a broom handle to Chase's back, forcing him to stand up all night. More»

(NEWSER) - A woman charged with the kidnapping and torture of a teenage boy says she's glad he managed to escape her California home, News10 reports. Kelly Lau said she invited the boy and his aunt, Caren Ramirez, to stay with her temporarily, but they never left. Ramirez kept the boy chained to a coffee table and beat him daily, sometimes using a heated aluminum bat, according to Lau. The teen, still with a shackle on his ankle, managed to escape earlier this week. More»

Aunt Arrested in Case of Tortured Calif. Teen

Woman had lived on and off with couple previously charged

(NEWSER) - California police have arrested the aunt of the teen who escaped from a house where he was apparently being held prisoner, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Caren Ramirez was found in Berkeley and handed over to police in Tracy, where the boy was found shackled and beaten. Ramirez faces charges of kidnapping, child abuse, and torture, as does the couple whose house the boy escaped from—where Ramirez also stayed. More»
