Minn. man faces vehicular-homicide rap after friend's fatal fall

(Newser) – A 47-year-old Minnesota man is facing vehicular-homicide charges after a friend fell from the golf cart he was driving while intoxicated Friday and died. The 41-year-old passenger fell backward from the rear of the moving cart after a fireworks display at a campground. He struck his head on a paved road, and CPR attempts failed to revive him.

The driver and all three passengers had been drinking, but aggressive driving was not cited as the cause of the accident. "The most tragic thing about all this is everyone on that golf cart was very good friends," said a police officer.

(NEWSER) - The career of ex-FAA chief Randy Babbitt might be the latest casualty of a drunken-driving arrest, but a new report shows that DWI has an increasingly female face. The number of women arrested on suspicion of DWI shot up 29% between 1998 and 2007—up from making up only 9% of all arrests 30 years ago to 20% by 2004. And as the Washington Post notes, female drunk drivers are older and more educated, but earn less than men who are busted. Perhaps most tellingly, however: They're likely the primary caregivers to children, leading blogger Janine D'Arcy to wonder if "mothering and drinking may be a more common problem than we realize." Randy Babbitt was driving on wrong side of road, cops say

(NEWSER) - Seems FAA administrator Randy Babbitt may have been flying a little too high over the weekend: Police in northern Virginia charged the veteran pilot with drunk driving after they spotted him driving on the wrong side of the road Saturday night, reports the Washington Post . Babbitt was alone, not involved in any accident, and cooperated with police, the Post notes. He requested the leave today, and Deputy Administrator Michael Huerta will take the FAA helm while Babbitt's employment status is under review. Babbitt has held the post since June 2009. More»

Texas driver charged with DWI

(NEWSER) - A Texas woman passed out at a red light, awoke as her husband tried to rouse her, then drove off dragging him along outside the car, KDAF-TV reports. Police suspect 50-year-old Mary Jane Lane (yes, her real name) passed out while under the influence of prescription drugs at the stop light. Her husband exited the SUV from the passenger side, opened her door, and tried to undo her safety belt, presumably so he could take over driving. That’s when she “came to” and hit the gas. More»
