(Newser) – Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius missed out in another attempt to qualify for the Olympics today, the AP reports, improving his time in the 400 meters but still falling short of the qualifying time at a meet in Rome. The 21-year-old South African will try again Wednesday in Switzerland, and could still be selected to the country's relay squad.

Pistorius said he still hopes to qualify for the Olympics but "it was always going to be a very difficult goal, I have to be realistic and I have to admit the chances are slim." Pistorius resumed training less than two months ago after a sports arbitration court ruled that he was eligible to run in Beijing.

(NEWSER) - A demonstration of a new anti-poaching procedure came to a tragic end in South Africa yesterday. A white rhino that had been sedated in order for veterinarians to implant a tracking device in his horn—and inject it with dye and a pesticide toxic to humans—died under anesthesia in front of stunned journalists, the Globe and Mail reports. "It’s a tragedy, it’s a disaster," says Charles van Niekerk, the vet who developed the technique. The rhino, nicknamed Spencer, was relatively old, and vets will do a post-mortem to see if he had a heart condition. More»

(NEWSER) - Yet another swimmer has been killed by a shark on a South Africa beach considered the most dangerous in the world. The victim this time was a 25-year-old swimmer who was standing up to his waist in water at a beach in Port St. John's. The shark nearly severed an arm and slashed the swimmer's chest and stomach. The man was hauled to the shore by lifeguards but died on the scene, reports the Telegraph . He was the sixth fatality from a shark attack off the same beach in six years. More»

(NEWSER) - They tried to tell Marius Els that a hippo couldn't be domesticated. Unfortunately for the South African farmer, they were right. The 40-year-old army major was killed by Humphrey, a 6-year-old "pet" hippo he considered one of the family, the Guardian reports. The 2,600-pound animal bit Els, who was known to ride on the hippo's back, before dragging him into the water and killing him. "Humphrey's like a son to me, he's just like a human," Els said earlier this year. More»

(NEWSER) - A leopard can't change its spots, but can South Africa's Zulus trade their traditional leopard-pelt adornments for a cheap knockoff? For the sake of protecting the country's dwindling population of the big cats, conservation biologist Tristan Dickerson hopes they can. Dickerson has created a fake version he says is as good as the real thing—only cheaper and machine-washable. He is close to finalizing a deal with the 5.6 million-strong Nazareth Baptist Church, which blends Christian and Zulu traditions, the Independent reports. More»
