Anti-Obama Bloggers Claim Censorship

Writers say Google allowed unwarranted freeze of their accounts

(Newser) – A rash of bloggers running anti-Obama sites are charging that Google took away their soapboxes, the New York Sun reports. Many of their blogs were temporarily suspended, likely after being flagged as spam by Obama supporters. Google reactivated the conservative blogs the next day, but those involved are not satisfied with the company’s apparent lack of safeguards.

Google accepted the blame and said a malfunctioning spam filter caused the suspensions. "We have restored posting rights to the affected blogs, and it is very important to us that Blogger remain a tool for political debate and free expression," a spokesman explained.

(NEWSER) - President Obama met with Apple's Steve Jobs in California yesterday, the New York Times ' notes. The two talked tech, innovation, and education, before the president took his leave to meet another tech titan: Marissa Mayer of Google. Mayer hosted the president and about 50 others at her home for a $30,000 a plate DNC fundraiser. (NEWSER) - China has renewed Google’s license to operate a commercial website there, despite the company’s clashes with Beijing over censorship, Google announced today. To get the renewal, Google had to agree to stop redirecting web surfers from its Chinese page, Google.cn, to its uncensored Hong Kong page. Google complied, after a fashion; Instead of being automatically redirected, visitors now see a link saying that the company has moved to Google.hk. More»

(NEWSER) - The White House has launched a stealth attack on Wall Street in a controversial but deft Internet ad. A link to "Help Change Wall Street" pops up when users search "Goldman Sachs SEC" on Google. The link takes users to mybarackobama.com and features a photo of Obama and his call for Wall Street reform, noting "too little accountability on Wall Street and too little protection for Main Street."
