Fani Willis has defended hiring Nathan Wade as special prosecutor for the Georgia election interference case after Donald Trump and another defendant accused her of hiring her romantic partner. The Fulton County district attorney suggested racism is behind the attacks, the Hill reports. "I appointed three special counselors," Willis said Sunday at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, saying they are a white woman, a white man, and a Black man. "They only attack one," she said. Willis didn't use Wade's name, and she didn't address whether the two have a romantic relationship.
A court filing by Michael Roman says Willis and Wade benefit financially from their deal, though it cites no evidence, and Trump posted online that the prosecution should be dropped. Roman told the Washington Post that the accusations are based on sources and sealed court records. Speaking for 35 minutes at the church event honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., her first public appearance since the filing, Willis became emotional. "I hope for y'all this week I don't look like what I've been through," she said. All three prosecutors she hired are legal stars, she said, referring to Wade as "a great friend and a great lawyer."
