Elizabeth Edwards Backs Gay Marriage

But John's 'conflicted'

(Newser) – Elizabeth Edwards became the first potential White House resident yesterday to support gay marriage at an event kicking off San Francisco's Gay Pride Parade. Edwards declared she's "completely comfortable" with the idea, even though her husband isn't, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. John Edwards supports civil unions, but opposes gay marriage.

Elizabeth Edwards conceded that her husband is "very conflicted" about his position, which is shared by the leading Democratic candidates. Her appearance at a breakfast sponsored by a powerful gay Democratic club marked the first visit ever by a major presidential candidate or spouse to the 30-year-old Gay Pride event.

(NEWSER) - A measure making Washington the seventh state to allow gay marriage has cleared its final legislative hurdle. The state House passed the bill— which cleared the state Senate last week —and it is now headed for the desk of Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, who has promised to sign it, reports AP . The bill is set to take effect in June, but opponents plan to gather enough signatures before then to put it on hold pending a statewide referendum in November. More»

(NEWSER) - Kevin Drum at Mother Jones thinks today's court decision declaring California's ban on gay marriage to be unconstitutional is "great news" for sure, but he's not getting too excited just yet. Most people think this one is headed to the Supreme Court, where it looks like Anthony Kennedy will once again provide the swing vote, and "the betting money says this will get overturned 5-4," writes Drum. (NEWSER) - A big win for gay rights in California, at least for now: In a 2-1 decision, a federal appeals court ruled that the state's ban on gay marriages is unconstitutional. Supporters of Proposition 8, which limits marriage to a man and a woman, plan to appeal, paving the way for a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage as early as next year, reports the Los Angeles Times .
