Navy Accuses Sailors of Abusing Detainees

Six guards in Iraq face charges

(Newser) – The US Navy will court-martial six sailors who are charged with abusing detainees at a US prison camp in Iraq, Reuters reports. The sailors are accused of beating prisoners and confining them in an unventilated room with pepper spray, a Navy statement says.

Seven other sailors have received non-judicial punishments—mainly for failing to report the incident, not taking part. The abuse is alleged to have taken place at Camp Bucca, which holds the vast majority of the US military's Iraqi prisoners.

(NEWSER) - The only officer who faced a court-martial over the torture at Abu Ghraib has been cleared of all criminal wrongdoing. The BBC reports that Lt. Col. Steven Jordan was convicted in August of disobeying a gag order, but that decision was annulled and his record is now clean. Inmate's lawyer rips 'cruel, prolonged' solitary confinement

(NEWSER) - A once-secret Guantanamo disciplinary cell block was built for a whopping $700,000, reports the Miami Herald . The existence of "Camp Five-Echo"—intended as a grim punishment section for "uncooperative" detainees—was only confirmed last week, even though it was built by the military in 2007. The 24-unit boxcar-style block walls off prisoners with no view beyond their steel cells. Saudi-born Shaker Aamer, 45, a British resident, has been held there more than 100 days, said his attorney. "In Shaker’s case it’s prolonged solitary confinement. The conditions are cruel,” the lawyer added, noting that his client hasn't been a troublemaker, but is considered too "charismatic" to be housed with other prisoners. More»
