Baby Turtles Go Out for Italian

(Newser) – Sixty baby turtles took Rome restaurant-goers by surprise when they showed up under a table, Reuters reports. The newly hatched creatures normally instinctively head toward the sea from their beach birthplace, but “they saw the artificial lights and took the wrong route,” said a wildlife conservator. “The diners were at first quite curious and then someone alerted the coastal authorities,” who released the turtles in the sea.

(NEWSER) - A fake bomb sparked a major scare in the Rome subway system yesterday. Bomb disposal experts discovered that the device—found on an empty subway car at the end of the line—contained a cement-like powder instead of explosives and didn't have a trigger mechanism, AP reports. The city could "breath a sigh of relief," Rome's mayor told reporters. "It's a bluff, a provocation in bad taste that regardless showed there was no danger of attacks in our city," he said. (NEWSER) - An Italian mother who called the cops on a topless sunbather who was "troubling" her young sons by sensuously applying sunscreen has sparked a furious debate on the lack of couture on Italy's beaches. "Something like this happening in 2010 is absurd," snorted the Roman attorney for the 26-year-old topless woman. "It was a public beach and she could see no harm in what she was doing." He conceded that his "tall, brunette" client has an "ample breast," and is "naturally going to be sensuous when she applies cream to her chest," reports the Telegraph . More»

Dangers of captivity greater than danger of getting oiled

(AP) - Federal biologists are releasing thousands of endangered Kemp's ridley baby sea turtles into the western Gulf of Mexico, betting that by the time the silver dollar-sized swimmers make it to the oil-fouled waters of the eastern Gulf, BP will have cleaned up its goopy mess. Texas has not been significantly impacted by the oil spill, and the risks of holding turtles in captivity at a critical stage could be worse than the dangers of oil more than 400 miles away, the plan's supporters say.
