Alliance earlier stopped 'business as usual' over Georgia invasion

(Newser) – Russia formally suspended military cooperation with NATO today over Georgia, the Guardian reports, a move affecting operations in Afghanistan and the Mediterranean. “Cooperation had really already been ended with the Russians,” a US official said, per an alliance declaration earlier in the week. If NATO supports “the bankrupt Saakashvili regime to the detriment of partnership … it's not our fault,” Russia’s foreign minister said.

(NEWSER) - A revolt has broken out at an army base near the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, which the government is calling a Russian-backed military coup, the Guardian reports. The Georgian defense minister says the soldiers were being confined in their barracks, and at least one person has been arrested. (NEWSER) - NATO has expelled two Russian diplomats from its Brussels headquarters for spying, officials announced. France and Germany, worried about Russia’s response, blocked a similar move at an April summit.
