Tropical Storm blamed for 11 deaths in Florida, 1 in Georgia

(Newser) – Tropical Storm Fay made a record fourth landfall in Florida today, bringing the state’s death toll to at least 11 before heading west to Georgia and possibly New Orleans, the AP reports. At least one person, a 10-year-old boy, has already drowned in Georgia under Fay's heavy rainfall. Officials in New Orleans—which is near the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—have warned residents to avoid low-lying, easily-flooded areas.

(NEWSER) - Tropical Storm Fay made landfall in southwestern Florida early this morning but did not develop into a hurricane as feared, the Miami Herald reports. Heavy rain and 60mph winds have hit the state, but Fay is expected weaken as it moves inland. Nate expected to hit Mexico, while Maria churns in Caribbean

(NEWSER) - Irene, Katia, and Lee all made not-so-nice headlines, and unfortunately there’s more where they came from: Tropical Storms Nate and Maria are currently taking shape in the Caribbean and Atlantic. Nate, formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico, is expected to drop anywhere from 2 to 8 inches of rain on parts of Mexico, and could start moving north by tomorrow—by which point it could also strengthen into a hurricane. Hurricane Katia Weakens to Category 1

Forecasters say the storm will miss US coast

(NEWSER) - Hurricane Katia has weakened to Category 1 early this morning, after building to Category 2 on Sunday , its winds decreasing to 90mph, reports the AP . Katia is not expected to hit land, but its storm surge could affect the US East Coast, Bermuda, and parts of the Bahamas, according to meteorologists. Meanwhile, a tropical depression far out in the Atlantic is apparently building, set to become a tropical storm later today. Forecasters say it is heading toward Puerto Rico and could reach the islands by Sunday. More»
