The 1,000 Essential Films

Posted Jul 22, 07 4:41 PM CDT in Arts & Living

(Newser) – The Guardian isn't messing around with top 10 lists or top 100 countdowns—it sifted through the million-plus listings in the IMDb to come up with "1,000 films to see before you die."  The list is alphabetical, creating some hilarious juxtapositions and an opportunity to present the first listing under each of five important letters.

  • M: M, 1931, directed by Fritz Lang, starring Peter Lorre
  • O: Ocean's Eleven, 2001, directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring George Clooney
  • V: Les Valseuses, 1974, directed by Bertrand Blier, starring Gerard Depardieu
  • I: I Know Where I'm Going!, 1945, directed by Michael Powell and  Emeric Pressburger, starring Wendy Hiller
  • E: East of Eden, 1955, directed by Elia Kazan, starring James Dean
