Anglicans Making Nice With Darwin

Posted Sep 15, 08 12:04 PM CDT in Science & Health Arts & Living World

(Newser) – When Charles Darwin came out with his theory of evolution by natural selection nearly 150 years ago, the Church of England opposed it. But now, 200 years after the celebrated scientist's birth, the church has launched a website exploring its history with Darwin, and the church's head of public affairs has issued a posthumous apology, the Guardian reports.

Writes Rev. Dr. Malcolm Brown, "People, and institutions, make mistakes and Christian people and churches are no exception. When a big new idea emerges which changes the way people look at the world, it's easy to feel that every old idea, every certainty, is under attack and then to do battle against the new insights."

The Church made that mistake with Galileo's astronomy and has since realised its error. Some Church people did it again in the 1860s with Darwin's theory of natural selection. - Rev Dr Malcom Brown, of the Church of England
