Letterman Lambasts AWOL McCain

Posted Sep 25, 08 3:06 AM CDT in Arts & Living Politics

(Newser) – John McCain was scorched by the full fury of a Letterman scorned after blowing off last night's Late Show an hour before taping, the New York Daily News reports. "This just doesn't smell right. This is not the way a tested hero behaves," Letterman raged. "Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil." McCain told Letterman he was rushing back to Washington, but in fact was still in town, preparing for an interview with Katie Couric.

"I'm more than a little disappointed by this behavior,” Letterman said, also referring to McCain's call to suspend the presidential campaign. Is he suspending his campaign "because there’s an economic crisis— or because the poll numbers are sliding?” Letterman asked his audience.

You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now! - David Letterman
