Oregon State Stuns No. 1 USC

(Newser) – USC can kiss its No. 1 ranking goodbye. The team some had dubbed the greatest ever was toppled 27-21 last night by Oregon State, a 25½-point underdog. The Beavers derailed the Trojans offense and ran over what had been the nation’s best defense. “They just beat us up, plain and simple,” said a USC fullback. A blocked field goal did give USC a last chance to win, but their final drive fizzled.

(AP) - Ohio State players broke the rules and got to play in the Sugar Bowl anyway. Jim Tressel knew about the infractions and let it all happen. Now the Buckeyes and new coach Urban Meyer will pay for it next season. The NCAA hit Ohio State with a one-year bowl ban and additional penalties today for violations that started with eight players taking a total of $14,000 in cash and tattoos in exchange for jerseys, rings, and other Buckeyes memorabilia. Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing boys

(NEWSER) - Penn State's storied football program is reeling from a sex scandal that touches its top ranks: Longtime former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was yesterday charged with sexually molesting up to eight boys, and the school's athletic director and a vice president are expected to surrender tomorrow on perjury charges for failing to alert cops to the abuse, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer . A grand jury investigation yielded 40 charges spanning decades against Sandusky—20 of which allegedly took place while he worked for Joe Paterno, and the rest after his retirement in 1999, as he used Penn State facilities for his work with the Second Mile, a foundation for at-risk boys. 8 Miami Players Suspended After Booster Scandal

They, plus 4 others, must repay value of illicit benefits

(NEWSER) - In the wake of the University of Miami booster scandal , eight football players have been suspended by the NCAA for accepting illicit benefits from Nevin Shapiro. All of them must also repay the value of those benefits, ranging from $140 for quarterback Jacory Harris to $1,200 for defensive starter Olivier Vernon, who also received the harshest penalty with a six-game suspension. Five other players, including the quarterback, must miss Monday’s opening game before returning, while the remaining two will miss four games. More»
