Court overrules Bush administration's move to cross it off

(Newser) – A federal court restored gray wolves to the endangered species list in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin yesterday, again making it not OK to kill wolves that attack livestock or pets, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. In answer to a lawsuit by environmental groups, a judge said the wolves couldn’t be dashed from the list in those states while they were still endangered elsewhere.

The area's 4,000 wolves represent a comeback for the species, whose range, which once covered most of the continental US, is now just 5% of its former size, the AP notes. Not all are happy with the decision. “The facts on the ground have not changed,” said a hunting lobbyist. “There are plenty of wolves in the Great Lakes region.”

While Montana and Idaho have agreed to management plans with controlled wolf hunts, Wyoming allows unregulated hunting of wolves if they're not on the endangered list, so the federal government keeps the animals listed as endangered in Wyoming. (NEWSER) - To hear some politicians and lobbyists tell it, the fate of New Mexico’s oil industry rests on the fate of a five-inch lizard. The federal government is considering listing the dunes sagebrush lizard as an endangered species, the Wall Street Journal reports, and that spooks the industry, because Sceloporous arenicolus is capable of surviving in only one habitat: the oil-rich dunes of New Mexico and west Texas. Red-crested tree-rat walks up to biologists

(NEWSER) - A rare South American rodent not seen since the Spanish-American War has turned up at the doorstep of a nature reserve in Colombia. The red-crested tree rat ambled up to a pair of amazed volunteers at the El Dorado Reserve in the Sierra Nevada, Wired reports. The last recorded sighting of the elusive, guinea pig-sized rodent was in 1898, and recent missions to search the area for it came up empty. More»
