Ex-VP asks for privacy after son's arrest on drug charges

(Newser) – Al Gore III has posted bail and returned to rehab. A day after the ex-VP's son was busted for drugs, the 24-year-old magazine publisher "is getting treatment," his father said today. In his first public reaction, he appeared on the "Today" show and said, "We love him very much," adding, "We are going to leave it as a private matter."

The younger Gore underwent substance abuse counseling while at Harvard in 2003. His arrest on suspicion of possessing marijuana and an assortment of prescription drugs came after he was stopped for speeding on a freeway not far from his California home. The incident has distracted from his father's environmental work, which includes this weekend's Live Earth concerts.

Investigators are expected in the next few days to serve subpoenas on the singer's physicians and the pharmacies where Houston obtained multiple prescription drugs, reports the Los Angeles Times . Officials aim to determine whether the drugs were dispensed properly, and if the singer was receiving too many prescriptions, a source tells the newspaper. Investigators will likely pore over a state-created database of controlled substances prescribed in California. Tracking celebrity prescription drug use can be complicated because they may regularly use drugs prescribed to aides, according to law enforcement authorities. More»

(NEWSER) - A handful of workers at Boeing's Ridley Park plant were apparently doing more than building military aircraft: The FBI today arrested 36 current and former employees, along with a 37th individual, who were allegedly involved in illegally distributing prescription drugs. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the arrests follow a four-year investigation, which began at the behest of Boeing officials.
