(Newser) – After vanquishing Mexico in the CONCACAF tournament for North and Central America, a depleted American team went quietly in the first round of the Copa America, hosted by Hugo Chávez's Venezuela. The home team, by contrast, achieved its first victory in the tournament in 40 years, and will move on to the semifinals.

Chávez's larger victory may be the overall smoothness of a tournament on which the oil-rich country spent roughly $1 billion, building two new stadiums and refurbishing seven more. Protests against the socialist government have been sparse and, at any rate, not televised by the state.

(NEWSER) - Rumors of Hugo Chavez's pending death have been greatly exaggerated—or at least somewhat exaggerated—as new video aired on Cuban television yesterday shows a healthy looking Chavez talking with Fidel Castro, reports the BBC . Reports have swirled that the Venezuelan president is in critical condition in a Cuban hospital, possibly with prostate cancer, although officially he is getting minor surgery for a "pelvic abscess." (NEWSER) - The referees for Saturday’s US/England World Cup match have specifically brushed up on English profanity in an effort to crack down on foul language. In a move sure to terrify Wayne Rooney, Brazilian referee Carlos Eugenio Simon has had his team memorize 20 curse words. “We can’t do this in 11 different languages, but at least we have to know the swear words in English,” one assistant tells the Times . (AP) - Former lightweight champion Edwin Valero was detained today on suspicion of killing his wife, the gravest in a string of problems that have threatened to derail his career. The Venezuelan federal police chief said Valero was arrested after police found the body of his 20-year-old wife in a hotel in Valencia. Valero left the hotel room around dawn and allegedly told security he had killed Jennifer Viera. More»
