Violent Muslim DVD Seen as Stealth Attack on Obama

Posted Oct 16, 08 5:37 AM CDT in World Arts & Living Politics

(Newser) – A DVD on Muslims packed with violence and inserted into newspapers in key swing states is being viewed as a not-so-subtle attack on Barack Obama, reports CNN. Entitled Obsession, the production appears to capitalize on erroneous impressions that the Democratic candidate is Muslim and may be soft on terrorism. Some 28 million of the DVDs were inserted as advertisements into 70 newspapers last month, primarily in key campaign battleground states such as Florida, Ohio and Colorado.

"It's obvious that the group sponsoring it wants people to think more about terrorism, about security, about Middle East politics and less about the economy," said a political analyst. "That obviously favors one side—the Republicans." DVD distribution was paid for by the Clarion Fund, a nonprofit group established by the film's Israeli producer. Spokesmen denied the film was intended to influence the race. Its nonprofit status is now being challenged.

A nonprofit organization involved in political campaigning, promoting candidates, scaring people and influencing voters needs to be looked into seriously. - Nihad Awad, director of the Council on American Islamic Relations
