(Newser) – The fiery rhetoric at a Republican rally turned physical yesterday when one supporter kicked a journalist in the leg, the News & Record reports. Joe Killian, who works for the paper, was covering a clash between supporters of Barack Obama and John McCain after a Sarah Palin rally in North Carolina when one man confronted him for “chuckling” at the skirmish. “Oh, you think that’s funny?” he said.

“Then he kicked the back of [my] leg, buckling my right knee and sending me sprawling onto the ground,” recalled Killian, whose colleague Mark Binker calls the McCain supporter a “troglodyte” and wonders “whether Republicans aren't in some respect giving their supporters license for this sort of crap.” The incident is “troubling,” Binker writes. “I just hope it’s not a trend.”
