(Newser) – LA Galaxy owner Alexi Lalas, who shelled out roughly $250 million to bring aging superstar David Beckham to U.S. soccer, fretted publicly that Beckham must focus on the game and not the enhancement of his celebrity. The announcement came four days before the star's unveiling in the movie capital of the world.

The former England captain's debut will be against Chelsea on July 21st. Said Lalas: "Since the announcement of his signing, it's been crazy. Albeit good crazy. The eyes of the world are upon us now and we want to make sure we use that to our gain."

None of the conservative justices on the court is expected to leave soon, so Obama's appointments are not likely to tip the current conservative balance of power, especially in his first term. All we need in the 2010 and 2012 elections is for the right-wing to find fresh arguments for blaming the moral decline of Western civilization on the Democrats and the Obama administration. Thinking that a Supreme Court decision upholding gay marriage would take the issue away from the Republicans is wrong headed. Did Roe v. Wade have that effect with regard to the abortion debate? Things are evolving in the states, but we must proceed with caution. A push to bring in "activist judges" to overrule what was seen as the popular will was part of what allowed Proposition 8 to squeak by in California. The gay marriage push is part of what cost John Kerry the 2004 election. I am sure it is agony for many same gender couples to feel to feel their relationships are "so right" but to be treated otherwise. In the Hawaii legislature this year we did not even succeed in getting a Civil Unions bill passed. Times are changing, but watch out for that reactionary push-back. Finally, I don't even want to speculate about Olson's motives, but I wish he'd just volunteer his time to helping LAMBDA and the ACLU, rather than trying to get the spotlight on himself.
