Miss Virginia Strikes Back at GOP Slight

'Real Virginia' swipe ruffles feathers of 3-time winner

(Newser) – Miss Virginia has entered the fray. Former crown wearer Kristi Lauren Glakas takes exception to the division of her state by a top McCain adviser into the "real Virginia" of the conservative South and the urban northern suburbs of DC. Glakas, an honor student at UVA who's won three state crowns, tells the political website FiveThirtyEight that the comments are divisive and insulting.

"We have every class, every race, an amazing immigrant population," said Glakas. "To say that part of Virginia is not part of the real America is just offensive." She also had a jab for Sarah Palin, saying that the candidate's hiding from the press gives beauty queens a bad name. "Even I've been interviewed by Chris Matthews."

(NEWSER) - The Virginia House of Delegates passed two abortion-related bills yesterday, and the AP isn't mincing words in describing them, or the process, saying the GOP supermajority "muscled [through] two of the most restrictive anti-abortion bills in years." One requires women to have a "transvaginal ultrasound"—which the Virginian-Pilot noted in a scathing editorial earlier this month involves inserting "a condom-covered probe into a woman's vagina to obtain an image"—before undergoing an abortion. The other could essentially outlaw abortions entirely: Del. Bob Marshall's House Bill 1, which passed 66-32, declares that a person's rights begin from the moment sperm meets egg. (NEWSER) - The bill that passed in the Virginia state House last night was nicknamed the "Tebow bill," so it's only fitting that the delegate who introduced it would engage in some Tebowing after it passed. The bill would allow homeschooled students in Virginia to play sports at their local high school. Though it was first proposed in 2005—probably while Tebow was still in high school, says Del. Robert Bell—it eventually got its nickname from the Denver Broncos quarterback since he was allowed to play on his local team in Florida even though he had been taught at home by his mother. More»

Virginia Lawmakers OK Anti-Gay Adoption Rule

It allows agencies to block placements based on religious beliefs

(NEWSER) - Virginia's legislature has approved a controversial bill widely seen as a measure to curb adoptions by gay couples. It allows private agencies to deny placements based on religious beliefs, explains the Richmond Times Dispatch . "This law has one purpose, which is to protect the ability of religious groups receiving millions of dollars of taxpayer money to deny adoption and foster care placements involving gay and lesbian parents," complains a Democratic member of the House. "This isn't a 'conscience clause'—it's a 'state-sponsored discrimination clause.'" More»

State Senate expected to do away with 19-year-old limit today

(NEWSER) - Today's big gun story comes not from Arizona , but Virginia: The Virginia Senate aims today to shoot down a 19-year-old cap limiting residents to buying just one gun a month. Earlier this week, the Senate also passed a bill prohibiting towns from requiring fingerprints from people seeking permits to carry concealed weapons. The gun bills are two of a flood of changes expected to come down the Virginia pike now that the GOP controls the state Senate, House, and governor's mansion for only the second time since the Civil War. Virginia Senate Passes Pre-Abortion Ultrasound Bill

Democrat Janet Howell tried to add rectal rider to bill

(NEWSER) - Virginia's Senate has passed a law requiring women to have an ultrasound before they can obtain an abortion in the first of several anti-abortion measures that the state's Republicans—in control of both chambers and the governorship for only the second time since the Civil War—have in the works. The ultrasound exam will determine the age of the fetus. Women who choose not to view the images will be required to sign a statement, reports the Washington Post . The abortion provider will be required to keep a copy of the images in the patient's file. More»
