Nintendo Dominates Industry Show

Reeling competitors can't monkey with Wii's success in console wars

(Newser) – The video game industry met for its annual E3 trade show this week, and the word is Nintendo's got game. While Sony and Microsoft scramble to restart, beset by slumping sales and expensive hardware woes, the Wii is humming along to acclaim and soaring profit margins. Other companies even pared down their expensive booths at this year's California show.

Meanwhile, deep-pocketed Nintendo unveiled a gunlike controller called "the Zapper," a follow-up to the physically taxing Wii, and confirmed a 2007 shipping date for feverishly anticipated Mario titles. The president of Nintendo points out that there are only a few leisure hours in the day. "We intend to steal more of that time for video games," he says.
