Amsterdam Weeds Out Pot Cafes Near Schools

Liberal city chokes on measure handed down by Dutch government

(Newser) – The city of Amsterdam will close some of its famous cannabis-selling coffee shops, AFP reports, targeting cafes that operate near schools in keeping with a new directive from the Dutch government. The law, which will shutter 43 of the city’s 228 such establishments, isn’t terribly popular with city officials; the mayor said they’ve never caused trouble, and he “would never have created such a measure.”

(NEWSER) - The VFW is stirring up quite a bit of controversy—no, not Veterans of Foreign Wars, but Veterans for Weed. In addition to co-opting the VFW acronym, the pro-marijuana-legalization group also uses a logo that looks like the POW/MIA icon, except with the soldier smoking a joint. The real VFW has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the group, and because "VFW" is copyrighted, the tokers may have to comply with the acronym part. Pot-Based Drug Poised for FDA OK

Sativex for cancer pain already in advanced clinical trials

(NEWSER) - A company developing a marijuana-based mouth spray for cancer pain is hoping for FDA approval by next year. British firm GW Pharma is already carrying out advanced clinical trials for Sativex, the first pharmaceutical developed from raw marijuana, reports AP . Sativex contains marijuana components delta 9-THC and cannabidiol, and has already been approved in eight European nations and Canada and New Zealand for easing muscle spasms linked to multiple sclerosis. FDA approval would be a major breakthrough in the stalemate between federal drug enforcement and the 16 states where medical marijuana is legal. More»

Arizona Ordered to Allow Marijuana Sales

Gov. Jan Brewer needs to implement the law, judge rules

(NEWSER) - An Arizona judge has told the state's government to get out of the way and let people have the medical marijuana dispensaries they voted for in 2010 . The judge ordered Gov. Jan Brewer, a consistent opponent of medical marijuana, to fully implement the law and allow dispensaries to open, reports the Wall Street Journal . He also struck down restrictions requiring dispensary operators to be state residents with no history of bankruptcy or "government debts" like unpaid taxes or outstanding parking tickets. More»

(NEWSER) - A new study sure to warm the hearts of pot smokers: Puffing marijuana apparently doesn't hurt your lungs the way tobacco does, a quirk that probably has more to do with the way people smoke it than the pot itself, reports the Washington Post . In fact, pot smoking might even improve your lung capacity. Researchers measured it in 5,000 subjects over 20 years and saw improvements among moderate users of the drug. More»
