Nintendo to Launch Videos for Wii

Service will begin in apan in 2009

(Newser) – Nintendo plans to launch video programming for the blockbuster Wii game console, reports AFP. Players could access original programming online to watch on their TV sets. The service will be aimed initially at the Japanese market and expand to markets worldwide. Rival Sony already uses its popular PlayStation for online movie sales and advertising, and Wii players can now use their consoles to play games, surf the Internet and shop online.

(NEWSER) - First the hackers came for Sony’s PlayStation Network , and now they’ve breached Nintendo. The Japanese company announced today that one of its US website servers was hacked, but no company or customer information was compromised and nothing was damaged. Though the incident is minor compared to the PlayStation hacking and other recent attacks, it does raise questions about whether online services can ever be truly protected from hackers, the Wall Street Journal notes. (NEWSER) - Sony started restoring limited service to its online networks yesterday after taking its popular gaming system offline nearly a month ago after a massive security breach that affected 100 million users, reports the Wall Street Journal . Internet gaming, movie rentals, music services, and online video streaming are the first operations to be restored; full service should be restored by month's end. While the partial service allows users to play video games and chat online, Sony said consumers still cannot buy video games or other content using credit cards. More»

(NEWSER) - Nintendo will follow up its popular Wii with a new console system next year, the company announced today. The new system, which IGN notes is codenamed Project Cafe AKA Wii 2, will be showcased at Los Angeles's E3 Expo in June. The announcement comes as Nintendo reported sagging earnings and sales, AFP notes. Despite the Wii's popularity, sales have been declining as Nintendo faces increased competition from other console systems as well as iPhones and iPads. More»
