Study finds they spend a third of their time in meetings

(NEWSER) - It's no big secret that CEOs can make completely ridiculous amounts of money; what is less obvious to some is what they do that's so darn valuable. A group of London School of Economics and Harvard Business School scholars decided to dig into one aspect of CEOs' work week, by taking a look at how more than 500 of them organize their time. In their study, the executives' personal assistants recorded any activity the CEOs did that was at least 15 minutes long. The big reveal: CEOs are rarely alone, and spend a lot of their time in meetings (about 1/3 of their week), at business meals (about 5 hours per week), and on the phone (3 hours). More»

Journalism tops the list, and advertising isn't far behind

(NEWSER) - Parents of high school seniors take note: The Daily Beast has compiled a list of the 20 most useless college degrees, based on salaries, number of jobs available, and general trend of crappiness. The losers:

1. Journalism: Median starting salary is $35,800; percentage change in number of jobs from 2008 to 2018 is -6.32%.
2. Horticulture: $35,000; -1.74%
3. Agriculture: $42,300; -0.88%
4. Advertising: $37,800; -1.71%
5. Fashion design: $37,700; +0.81%

Don't be exhaustive—but it's okay to write more than a page

• Using an outdated guide. The one-page rule, for example, doesn’t fly anymore.
• Listing only job duties. Make sure to answer this question: “What did you accomplish in this job that someone else might not have?”

DC tops search engine's list

(NEWSER) - Washington, DC is the easiest city in the country to land a job, says job-search site Juju.com, which ranked cities by comparing the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ figures on unemployed workers to the number of job postings on Juju itself. The site finds 1.87 “unemployed individuals per advertised job” in the District. More»

• Make sure your account name contains something about your profession, so your feed shows up when people search associated topics.
