UN workers say incendiary weapon used to attack Gaza compound

(Newser) – Witness accounts are adding weight to accusations by human rights groups that Israel is violating international law by using white phosphorus as a weapon against civilians, the Guardian reports. Palestinians say the incendiary shells were used to set their homes on fire and doctors report treating patients with injuries clearly caused by white phosphorus, which can burn the skin down to the bone and cause severe respiratory problems.

International law forbids the use of incendiary weapons against civilians, although it is legal to use white phosphorus as a smokescreen. UN officials say the shells hit a warehouse in their Gaza compound Thursday. "The main warehouse was badly damaged by what appeared to be white phosphorus shells," the UN's humanitarian affairs chief said. "Those on the ground don't have any doubt that's what they were. If you were looking for confirmation, that looks like it to me."

If they hit people, they cause appalling burns, and if they hit buildings they can set them on fire, which is why we are saying they should not be used in these circumstances, whether or not they are banned. - UN humanitarian affairs chief John Holmes

Hamas isnt even a nation, it's a group of thugs that was a thorn in Israel's side - well, quite a thorn, as there actions killed 5 or 6 Israelis. In response the entire, yes, nation of Israel and their army has killed over 1000 living in the same city as some of Hamas do. I agree, Israel has every right to defend itself, but it seems they've taken a page from Bush's warbook, and have decided killing civilians is just part of war, and of little consideration. -- Someone remind me WHY is Israel our buddy?

you are delusional. can you really sit there and compare the the tactics of an undeveloped nation against those of a developed one. just because they are israel doesn't mean they have the right to break international law.

What the human rights groups should be protesting is Hamas using Palestinian civilians as human shields
