Murder-Suicide Parents Fired for Misconduct

Dad claimed suicide pact; blamed Kaiser

(Newser) – The Los Angeles man suspected of killing his wife and five children before committing suicide lost his job due to misconduct, not layoffs, the Times reports. Ervin Antonio Lupoe and wife Ana were terminated from a Kaiser Permanente medical center, and sources say allegations of fraud were involved. A letter Lupoe sent to KABC-TV indicated the investigation had to do with employment misrepresentation and a child-care issue.

Lupoe may have started shooting as early as Monday night. He called the police yesterday. His letter, sent yesterday morning, said he and his wife “felt it better to end our lives, and why leave our children in someone else’s hands” following their “horrendous ordeal.” He blamed Kaiser for his actions, claiming a supervisor suggested he shoot himself and that the hospital did not help his family.

(NEWSER) - Two adults and two children were found dead of gunshot wounds in a California apartment yesterday, while another man was found with stab wounds outside its door, police say. Though the details remain hazy, police believe the mother of the kids shot herself when police arrived, the Fresno Bee reports. (NEWSER) - The suspected gunman wanted in the murder of a Mount Rainier park ranger has been found dead, reports King 5 News . Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, was found face down in chest-deep snow, and while there's no official cause of death, the AP notes that it appears likely that he froze to death overnight. Park officials had scrambled to evacuate the park after Ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death yesterday after attempting to stop Barnes at a checkpoint in the park. More»

Protesters blame costs on excessive use of cops

(NEWSER) - Occupy LA protesters cost the city a cool $2.35 million—at least—largely in police overtime. The price tag doesn't include the costs of repairs to the lawn during the two-month encampment and the fountain outside City Hall. Time-and-a half overtime for the regular force and General Services cops who patrol parks cost the city a total of just over $1.5 million. As much as $1.7 million of the total costs will be added to the city's expected $72 million debt, reports the Los Angeles Times . The rest will be covered by standard operating costs. (NEWSER) - Eight US soldiers have been charged in the death of Danny Chen, a 19-year-old private who appeared to have fatally shot himself Oct. 3 in a guard tower in Kandahar, the Washington Post reports. It’s unclear if the soldiers have been charged with actually killing him, or of driving him to commit suicide—one military official told his family in October that fellow soldiers had berated him with ethnic slurs and physically abused him.
