(Newser) – The California mother of octuplets “is obsessed with children” and wanted “just one more girl” even though she already had six kids, her mother told the Los Angeles Times. The 33-year-old divorcee “is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself,” said her mother, who filed for bankruptcy last year, claiming $1 million in debt from a bad housing investment.

All 14 children have the same father, a sperm donor who was an acquaintance, the New York Post reports. Nadya Suleman hadn’t expected all eight embryos to make it to birth. Controversy is raging over the medical decisions in the process. “I cannot see circumstances where any reasonable physician would transfer (so many) embryos into a woman under the age of 35,” said one doctor. But there are no laws involved, noted another.
