Lay Off, Cupid: Men Need Their Own Holiday

Share

(Newser) – If men had time to catch their collective breath after racing around town to find the right Valentine’s Day gift they would realize they’re getting the short end of Cupid’s arrow, Chuck Cohen rants in the Christian Science Monitor. “The truth is there are more guy-giving than guy-receiving days in the year,” Cohen declares. Solution: a new holiday called Guy Day.

From bridal showers (note the lack of groom showers) to Mother’s Day (which outranks Father's Day by a mile), men just can’t win. Even the once guys-only Super Bowl is now just another inclusive party. Cohen's new Guy Day would be "a day when women worry about getting the 'right' present—a day, above all, without hearing one song by ABBA."

"On days like Valentine's, even though chocolate pours out of stores like molten lava, guys get, if we're lucky, a couple of moldy Twix bars left over from Halloween," Chuck Cohen writes.   (Shutter Stock)
"Right now a lot of guys are scurrying around trying to find the 'right' flowers or the 'right' card for Valentine's Day. Men, however, don't just face these tasks on Feb. 14," Chuck Cohen notes.   (Shutter Stock)

There is the wedding shower, another occasion for a deluge of presents for everyone but the male. Ever hear of a 'groom' shower? A guy getting a new bowling ball or drill press?

Guys aren't totally without their days. Birthdays and Christmas are sort of egalitarian holidays. Yet, even here, men accept any gift, while women always have something specific in mind. - Chuck Cohen, Christian Science Monitor

When 25 chorus boys in bathing suits and flippers were dancing on a dock to ABBA, even my wife leaned over and said, sympathetically, 'You can leave now.' - Chuck Cohen, Christian Science Monitor

Those aren't holidays douche bag! We could use a holiday like this, although I disagree about calling it "Guy Day." I think something a little classier than that would be nice. OR just remember what you got today on Valentines Day from your wife and next year you can feel justified getting her something of equal value. I hate double standards. Reply

gee being such a douche bag , I got my wife eleven red roses, and one white. Eleven to represent the eleven years I was privileged to be married to her, and one white to represent me asking for another year, next year it will be one more. ect...I also got her a trip to the local day spa, and me and my daughter made a garden stone with our child's hand print and a big heart and my hand print under hers to represent that both of us are thinking of her, and brought her breakfast in bed...all for valentines day...and you did what for yours....asshole????
