Says it was only intended to mock stimulus

(Newser) – Rupert Murdoch eats some crow today, with a short statement in the New York Post apologizing for the now-infamous chimpanzee cartoon. “I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused,” Murdoch writes. “The only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist.”

(AP) - Police are investigating alleged email interception by Rupert Murdoch's Times of London, a British lawmaker said today—dragging Britain's oldest national newspaper into the broadening scandal over press wrongdoing. Labour Party legislator Tom Watson, who helped lift the lid on tabloid phone hacking, released a letter from police confirming they were investigating alleged email hacking by the Times. More»

News Group Newspapers appears to acknowledge cover-up

(NEWSER) - The British newspaper arm of Rupert Murdoch's media empire has reached settlements with 36 alleged victims of the News Corp phone hacking scandal. Politicians, a soccer player, and actor Jude Law are among those who settled out of court, for amounts ranging from $40,000 to $200,000 plus legal fees, the New York Times reports. There are 60 claims from alleged victims—and nearly 6,000 potential victims—and 10 of those who did not settle are seeking court trials starting next month. More»

(NEWSER) - Rupert Murdoch on Twitter? It seems unlikely, and many, including Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff , insist the account that popped up yesterday is fake. But none other than Twitter's own executive chairman, Jack Dorsey, tweeted last night: "With his own voice, in his own way, @RupertMurdoch is now on Twitter." The first tweet was posted 19 hours ago, and the account already has nearly 20,000 followers. It also has the blue and white "Verified Account" checkmark next to Murdoch's name. More»
