Bloggers, Unions Team Up to Push Dems to the Left

Liberal coalition will fund competition for centrist incumbents

(Newser) – A new political action committee backed by liberal bloggers and labor unions aims to push the Obama administration and Democratic establishment to embrace more progressive politics, the New York Times reports. Called “Accountability Now” the group will recruit and promote liberal candidates to challenge centrists in Congress. Their goal is to allow President Obama to embrace more liberal positions without fear of reprisal from conservative Democrats.

“We’re going to be about targeting incumbents to make space for Obama to be more progressive,” said a blogger from Salon, who acknowledged that there might be times when the group needs to push the administration itself for more liberal policies. Accountability Now will have support from the Service Employees International Union, a major labor group, and MoveOn.org.
