Flower Shows Wilt Under Recession

Hard times, changing tastes killing off lavish displays

(Newser) – The economic downturn and changing demographics are killing off flower shows across America, the New York Times reports. Sponsorship money is drooping and greenhouses are becoming costlier to heat. One of the most famous, the New England Flower Show, canceled this year’s event after 137 years of bringing an extravagant burst of color to winter-bashed Bostonians.

Organizers say the shows are as expensive to put on as a Broadway play and attendances are sinking as a new generation prefers to get its gardening tips online. "We’ve had increasing costs and decreasing revenues," said an official from Bangor, Me.'s now-defunct flower show. "We basically just fell on the sword and said, ‘Hey, this is more than we can handle without gardening ourselves into the poorhouse."

the firepower is to be able to keep what you stockpile...lol......ok back to the ACTUAL story....When times get rough you have to cut back on frivolities.....which is a bit of a bummer, because I would love to have a green house and water garden, and grow the wifey flowers all year.....but...........

What nice sentiments for the wife, riffman...(Wonder if such considerate thoughts ever cross the mind of a blowhard like Dr. Phil??) And yeah, I would love a greenhouse too. Until my current/new apartment, I was growing tomatoes every summer here in NYC, with great success... My favorite thing was to bring some sweet red fat ones home to my mother in Missouri... talk about a backwards scenario!... Signed, VeggiesInNY
