Establishment hopes to attract 'new faces' to adult industry

(Newser) – A prominent Rhode Island strip club is betting that long spells of unemployment will attract newcomers to the adult entertainment industry, the Providence Journal reports. The Foxy Lady is even hosting a job fair tomorrow, looking to hire up to 25 new dancers, bartenders and bouncers. Unemployment in Rhode Island is above 10%, and a Foxy Lady manager hopes that translates into “new faces” eager to join her business.

“With the way unemployment is right now, there are a lot of people looking for a job who normally wouldn’t come to the Foxy Lady,” said Lori Savickas. “They’re just hungry to start working somewhere. They might find out that it is totally different than they expected.”

(NEWSER) - Few Americans were immune to the recession, but the plight of young men continues to be particularly dire. The unemployment rate for male high-school grads ages 25 to 34 is 14.4%, far above the 9% national average; the figure also marks a huge jump from the 6.1% jobless rate they faced before the downturn, the Wall Street Journal reports. Even worse off are high-school educated men ages 20 to 24, who suffer a whopping 22.5% jobless rate. More»

CBO: 'Profound' Challenges Ahead

Deficit should fall, but employment, growth remain low

(NEWSER) - The picture for 2011 is a glum one—a $1.3 trillion deficit, 9.1% unemployment rate—and it's not going to get much brighter in the next few years, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office. In it, notes Politico , the CBO warns of "profound budgetary and economic challenges" and growth "well below the economy’s potential." Unemployment won't dip below 8% until 2014, it predicts. More»

Unemployment claims, oil prices lead to drop

(NEWSER) - The number of unemployment claims jumped to 429,000 last week, an unexpected rise that led the Dow Jones industrial average to fall below 12,000. Falling oil prices—they decreased 5% today—also drove US stocks lower, the AP reports. The Dow was down recently more than 215 points, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 21 points and the Nasdaq had dropped 29 points.
