Elle fashionista goes weeks without a drop: 'I love not drinking'

(Newser) – British Elle fashion editor Stacey Duguid knew her drinking was getting to be a problem: “As well as possible health issues, the days I've spent hungover have been some of the most horrific of my life,” she writes in the Daily Mail. But it was a mammoth task. “You can't beat that warm, fuzzy glow,” she says. A hypnotherapist had worked wonders for a colleague. Skeptical but game, Duguid gave her a try.

“I didn't think for one second it would work on me; I'm no emotional pushover. But sure enough, within 10 seconds I was under,” Duguid writes. “As I listened to Marisa softly croon: 'You love not drinking,’ I lay there and thought: 'No, I bloody well don't.'” But on a trip to Milan soon after, “I wasn't remotely tempted” to have a drink. Six weeks later, “colleagues are amazed at the calmer, more balanced me.”

(NEWSER) - More revelations from the new report by the CDC on binge drinking in America: Universities may be home to the biggest binge drinkers in America, but it turns out the most frequent bingers live in retirement homes, reports Discovery . The report defines a "binge" as five drinks in one short time for a man, or four for a woman, and found that people over 65 who binged did so most often, an average of 5.5 times a month. (NEWSER) - Federal health officials have released their most detailed study yet of America's binge drinkers—and if you're a college-educated, high-earning young white man from Wisconsin, you may already be drunk by the time you read this. Researchers found that 38 million Americans, roughly a sixth of the adult population, are binge drinkers who over-indulge an average of 4.4 times a month, Bloomberg reports. A binge was defined as five or more drinks in the space of two hours for men, and four or more drinks for women. More»

Chicago-area stores to offer booze, entertainment

(NEWSER) - There's still no chance of getting an Irish coffee in Starbucks, but beer and wine will soon be available in up to seven of the coffee chain's Chicago-area outlets. Following a model first introduced in Seattle and Portland, Starbucks aims to boost traffic in the evenings by offering beer and wine, as well as plate snacks like bread with olive oil and live music and poetry readings in some stores, the Chicago Tribune reports. (NEWSER) - Are you willing to pay an extra $2 for your beer? That’s the amount, per drink, that excessive drinking costs the US in medical expenses and other societal costs including lost work productivity, car crash-related property damage, and incarceration for alcohol-related crimes, according to a new CDC calculation.
