Grieving mom wants son, 21, to 'live on'

(Newser) – A Texas judge has granted a grieving mother's wish to have some of her 21-year-old son's sperm collected posthumously, the Austin American-Statesman reports. Marissa Evans intends to have a grandchild from a surrogate mother. "I want him to live on," Evans said of her son, Nikolas, who died after being assaulted and beaten last month. "I want to keep a piece of him."

The boy was walking with his family when the animal pounced, leaving him with puncture wounds and scratches, AP reports. The mountain lion tried to attack another family, but was fended off with a backpack. Children of caring mothers have larger hippocampi: study

(NEWSER) - A mother's care may affect the physical development of a child's brain, a study suggests. Researchers found that preschool kids with more nurturing mothers had larger hippocampi than their peers by the time they were school age, reports HealthDay News, via the Philadelphia Inquirer . The hippocampus is a part of the brain that deals with learning and memory, among other functions. The study "provides very powerful evidence of the importance of early nurturing for healthy brain development and has tremendous public health implications," says its author. More»

(NEWSER) - Researchers say they have found what could be a cheap, reliable, and long-lasting form of male birth control, although it involves zapping the testicles with ultrasound. A study on rats found that sound waves slowed sperm production to levels that would cause infertility in humans, making ultrasound a "promising candidate" for contraception, the BBC reports. More»

(NEWSER) - Gov. Rick Perry's ill-fated presidential run cost the taxpayers of Texas nearly $800,000, spent on travel fees for the security detail that followed Perry around on his campaign from September through November, a state report reveals. Perry took 48 trips across state lines, mostly to primary battlegrounds Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. One trip in September from South Carolina to Iowa and back racked up $45,122 in charges, including $10,834 for hotels and $7,526 for food, reports the Austin American-Statesman . More»
