Presidential Pup Arrives Tues.

(Newser) – After months of anticipation, the moment the nation has been waiting for is at hand: America's First Dog will arrive Tuesday, says TMZ. The presidential pooch, a Portuguese Water Dog acquired with the help of Ted Kennedy’s family, is a 6-month-old puppy for whom the White House will be his second home; his first owner returned him to the Texas kennel that bred him.

The dog is actually of the same lineage as the three Portuguese Water Dogs that Sen. Kennedy owns. The Kennedy’s family will present the dog to the Obamas, but it’s technically a gift from the kennel, which is doing what it calls "re-homing" the dog, apparently making the transaction in compliance with rules about gifts to the president. The dog's first owners named him Charlie, but the Obamas are expected to rename it.

"Re-homing" is just one step removed from a breed rescue operation. The dog probably would've ended up in rescue if the Obamas hadn't decided to take him.

Sorry to see the dog is not from a shelter or a rescue, but it's not too bad..
