Webb Throws Shutout, Again

(Newser) – Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb threw his second complete-game shutout in a row Saturday night, a 1-0 beauty against the Nationals. Webb broke his own team record with 33 consecutive scoreless innings and catapuled the D'Backs to their 17th victory in 20 games.

HIs shutout follows a 3-hit, 3-0 victory against Los Angeles last Sunday; the last time he allowed a run was in the sixth inning of a 6-2 loss to the Cubs in Chicago on July 20, five starts ago. Arizona clinched its seventh series in a row and are four games ahead of second-place San Diego in the NL West.

Soto, 25, was voted an All-Star Game starter and finished the season with a .285 batting average, 23 home runs, and 86 RBI, the Tribune reports. He easily beat out Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto.

The once-lowly Tampa Bay Rays clinched their first playoff appearance in franchise history today with a 7-2 win over Minnesota. The Rays will earn at least a wild-card spot, but they also hold a 2 1/2-game lead over Boston in the AL East, the Tampa Tribune reports.
