Fear Returns to Baghdad

(Newser) – The recent spate of violence in Iraq may pale in comparison to the relentless suicide bombings of 2006, but Baghdad is beginning to hunker down in fear again, the Los Angeles Times reports. Residents are curtailing their public activities, checking in with each other more often to make sure family members are okay, and worrying about the imminent withdrawal of US troops.

"They should only go when the Iraqi government is strong, and it's not strong enough yet," said one resident. US officials counter that while the recent bombings have been deliberately high-profile, there’s been “no significant increase in the number of attacks per week.” Last month was the deadliest in 7 months for US troops in Iraq, with 18 fatalities.

I feel a shadow of danger on the horizon, that the old days are coming back again. It's like we're seeing the early phases again of the sectarian war.
- Baghdad resident Nidal Shahar, 36

They may have accomplished their task, which is to kill lots of innocent civilians, but they haven't accomplished their purpose.
- US military spokesman Maj. Gen. David Perkins, on the lack of sectarian retaliation to the recent bombings

The only way we could really end this war quickly and stop screwing around is how we did it in WW2 in Germany. Bomb them to bits, move in and rebuild it ourselves. We still have troops and bases in Germany, and how many years has it been? I don't know my Ottoman Empire history real well, but wasn't the Middle East pretty stable before WW1? Then the Brits took over and divided it up and it's been warring factions ever since. Maybe they should fix this mess.

But gee wasn't the fact that violence was down in Iraq the proof that the right touted for the surge working? Maybe anybody with half a brain could have figured out that it would die out only as long as the troops were there in force and we were paying some not to fight back. Since we don't have that force there now and we aren't paying out the money the violence will come back. These different factions have centuries of hate between them and aren't going to give up any power that they think is there for the taking.
