Mass. Man Held in Rape of 2-Year-Old

Was supposed to be babysitting girlfriend's toddler

(Newser) – Massachusetts police have charged a 22-year-old man with raping his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, setting fire to her blanket, violently resisting arrest, marijuana possession, and a litany of other charges, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports. Christopher C. Mundell was supposed to be babysitting the toddler, and was highly intoxicated upon arrest.

Police arrived at the scene early this morning to find the mother outside with the child, who had a large cut on her leg; a local hospital later determined the toddler had been raped. Mundell emerged from the house bloodied, and police arrested him when they saw a knife hidden in his shoe. Later, at the station, he got into an altercation with cops and “said he was going to find a gun and kill them all,” the police chief said.

In a previous post, I advanced the argument that humans who show themselves to be a serious danger to their fellow beings, should be treated just as you would treat a non-human animal in a similar situation, that is you castrate them, or you euthanize them. I can't imagine how this individual could even want to go on living, after having done such horrible thing. But he most likely does want to go on living. Seeing as he didn't murder the child, he probably will not get the death penalty, but he should certainly be castrated and imprisoned, in my view, not as a punishment, but to prevent him from hurting anyone else. I know there are many who would say he should be severely punished to deter others from committing a similar offense. History has shown, however, that the death penalty, and even more horrific punishments do not deter others from committing crimes. In situations such as this, we need to get away from the concept of punishment. Do you euthanize a rogue elephant to punish him? No! Do you castrate a stallion or a bull to punish them? No! Reply

On the other conversation that seems to be going on in this thread, the people that we pick up on the battlefield are not US citizens therefore are not protected under the Constitution. Once everyone gets that through their head then we can all move on. Our rights don't just apply to everyone in the world, the same as you wouldn't want everyone else's laws applying to you. Our rights, laws, and protections are for our citizens not everyone in the world.

It seems to me that if God was going to intervene in this little girls life he should have done it prior to the rape not after. Perhaps he could have created an electrical storm or a tornado to distract the babysitter or maybe he could have caused the babysitter to aquire a migraine headache. I don't know, something... Or maybe God enjoys healing hearts so much he intentionally allows pain and suffering. I know I always try to cause as much pain and suffering as I can to my children, just so I can make it better. PLEASE ... You also seem convinced of how this God thinks, would react, etc. If I asked you how you are so sure about all of this, you might tell me your assurance comes from reading Gods word in the form of inspired scripture. If I asked you how you can be sure that there is any writings that are, in fact, the inspired word of God, you might quote me scripture to prove your point. This is, of course, circular logic, and as such, totally invalid. Or you might tell me your assurance comes directly to you from God, that is by divine inspiration. If this be the case then you, indeed, have sure knowledge. But even if I have no such sure knowledge, you would expect me to believe you anyway, just on blind faith. Sorry no can do. Reply

freethemall, I argued against God for my first 29 years based on exactly what you wrote - I wanted a logical explanation. Then I read the bible (to disprove it), prayed with an open mind (to prove my point), and followed the commandments (to once again prove my point) and slowly I realized that there are things that can not logically be explained. The first step toward understanding God is to try and believe ion something you can not logically explain. I will be 40 in July. I am now convinced God exists from personal experiences and from slowly understanding Scripture, which admittedly can be difficult to understand at first. As I said, I could have wrote EXACTLY what you posted 10 years ago - give faith a chance, what do you have to lose if your right and I am wrong...if anything you'll stengthen your arguement. Try reading the bIUble each day and learning when each book of the bible was written (proven by artifacts etc.), try praying insistantly, look in the Bible for errors and inconsistancies and bring them up to those who understand the Bible (Bible study groups, or a local BIBLE BASED church). Go to church but don't give them a penny until you believe you want to. Listen to the word of God on radio stations and on the internet. For me it happened slowly from age 29 to 36 - then my relationship with God fast tracked from 36 - 39 with deep personal experiences that defy logic. It's odd for me to write this considering who I was, but I can't disprove my personal experiences and those who know me well are amazed at the transformation in my life. I can't explain it (logicly) but I know it changed me (experience).

voiceofreason: If God did not allow for free will we would all be robots worshipping an unseen God. He responds to genuine insistant prayers that are from a believer's heart. In my previous post to freethemall, I shared that I used my free will to argue against God and even convince others to believe my way until I was 29 years old. (I'll be 40 in July). Imagine if the people you love were forced to show you affection (no free will) - it wouldn't be genuine and you would know it. If we know it , God does too, and He wants true love from His people, not forced love - there is where free will comes into play. However, God absolutely intervenes in our lives, but not always to interfere with Evil (like this heinous act). God knew this rapist would act this way, but what we do not know as bloggers is what will happen next. We only see what is happening now. For me to guess God's ultimate plan for allowing this evil to happen would be foolish, only He knows why He allowed it to happen, but one thing I am sure of - you and I will never be able to see the future as God can. So we grumble at current circumstances (like this one), but we only know the beginning of this story and rarely will we see how it all ends up (1 or 30 years from now), how God is forced in a n evil filled world to turn evil actions into good. (Think of 9-11 and the turn out of love from citizens - not to mention some miraculous God moments reprted by some of the survivors) God allows evil - it is the ultimate form of free will. The reason you and I are confused is becasue we are limited with the brains we have to understand more than what we can see and process. If God wanted us to understand it all He could have given us brains to understand it all, although I wonder how happy we'd be if we understood it all. Also, if we understaood all that God understood we wouldn't think we needed a Father in Heaven at all because we would be self sufficient. God wants a relationship of love with His creation - but not a forced relationship, a genuine one.

I am not sure how this conversation could turn into a bible thumping session...but "God" has nothing to do with it. Open your eyes people, there is no big man on a throne deciding what happens. We control our own destiny and choose our path in life. We have lessons to learn while we are here, and when we are done, we leave and move on to whatever is next on our journey. Please do not burden yourself with the thought that God shouldnt have let this happen. Lets keep the little girl in our thoughts and hope that justice gets served as appropriate. I know this little angel, and I hope her and her family can make it through this trauma. Reply

Sorry for the unclarity on my part: I don't argue against God, I merely acknowledge that I know nothing about Him, Her, or It. I was raised as a Southern Baptist. At the age of about 12 years old, I was "saved". This occurred because I wanted to escape going to an eternal burning hell. According to baptist doctrine, if I was indeed "saved" after walking up to the preacher, during the "invitation" and shaking his hand, and answering yes to his questions, then I am still "saved", for Baptist doctrine asserts that "once saved, always saved. Of course, other denominations believe that it is possible to "backslide" and, thereby, not be "saved" anymore. As a child, I heard adults argue "doctrine" all the time. To back up their arguments, they would quote "scripture". Sometime in my teen years, I started reading the Bible myself, so that I might form my own opinions. As I perused this "holy book", I was taken aback by it's inconsistencies, etc. I ask my mother. who was very religious about this. She indicated that it made her believe it even more, since if it were written by men, they would take care to make believable, but God didn't need to prove anything to anybody, or some such argument as that. As I reached adulthood, I became aware that other people, in other cultures had different holy books, such as the Koran. And of course, there were the LDS with their Book of Mormon. So, what to believe. As I indicated in my post that you responded to, people who believe in their scripture are prone to quote this same scripture, to back up their believe. In your response, you did not address my assertion that this is circular logic, and totally unreliable, other than to hint that I should not trust my own logic, but have faith in God. To refute this, I quote Alan Watts (I would recommend that you google him): "Irrevocable commitment to any religion is not only intellectual suicide; it is positive unfaith because it closes the mind to any new vision of the world. Faith is, above all open-ness---an act of trust in the unknown." Finally, you assert that your life has been transformed. I don't doubt that, I've seen religion do that for people. On the other hand, I don't believe for a moment that a belief in God is necessary to a person's morality. I'm positive that an atheist can be a moral and compassionate person. After all, is it necessary that a person be bribed by heaven, or threaten by hell, to be a good person? I think not! Reply

Why bad things happen to good people has always been a bone for the naysayers of christianity why didn't God intervene if he is good? thats needs a prolonged answer but a similar question that might help is this: Why do good things happen at all? While we see evil all around us its undeniable that evil is somehow restrained no? The common Grace of God in his universe makes it so that the sun shines on both the evil and the good. As far as your experience with the church there is a long standing dispute if the bible teaches "once saved always saved" it is a misunderstanding / application of the doctrine of Salvation. Jesus died for his elect people whom God choose from before the beginning of time. The bible is a news report of events that happened. Like any news report it has backstory and side story but mostly it is about Gods redeeming his choosen people to himself. All are called to accept its claims, the other faiths and traditions are at the very core rejections of the news report. All other faith twist the report for there own purposes, but none reach the true God. Your are right re: morality it is a false indicator. As far as Alan Watts goes his idea of faith in Christ closing the mind to any new vision. Any new vision of the world isn't true for the simple fact that its new. If its true it isn't new. If its true it has always been true. I think your old churhes use of bribery into heaven and the threat of hell is also unfortunate. And that why I would agree with (reader766...) that you would be well served to find a solid bible believing church. That you have such disdain for elements of christianity tells me a-lot about the misgiving of man, it should not lead you to a distaste for Gods grace. It also might mean that if your approach to meet your pastor and receive salvation was genuine and you were sorry for your rejection of Christ then maybe it is true however misspoken "once saved always saved" Those who belong to Christ he will never let go. .

First, his offenses are alleged, and he has not yet been proven guilty of anything. Second, mugshots have a way of making anyone look "unhealthy." I challenge anyone who believes differently to go get one taken. Third, making more laws is not the solution, at some point we are all responsible for the protection of our children. Some fault lies with the mother in this case... and even if there were a law on the books, I see no mention in the allegations about this guy having any type of record. Isn't that part of the inherent flaw with freedom, that we have the freedom to do whatever we want? If one violates the laws as this man is alleged, it is their freedom and choice to do so, and there are already laws on the books to punish them. Reply

Marijuana is a drug that in most case smakes a person relaxed and non agressive and non violent....Alcohol in that case is one of the biggest reason while already scum like this do things like this...ban all drugs!......also alcohol! On the Mary Jane. Mary makes you paranoid and non violent (it's really addictive and can make you a sad mess). Alcohol will ruin your life... I was out with my girlfriend the other day in a boat on the river drunk as a skunk, I fell in. I couldn't stop laughing let alone get myself out... Motor skills were far gone.
