Allen's Idol Win Another Triumph for Religious Right

(Newser) – Last night’s American Idol was more than just a reality-show finale: It was a symbolic victory of the religious right over the liberal left; red states over blue states. At least according to two bloggers. “For a theory about how Kris Allen pulled an upset over the wildly popular Adam Lambert, the Christian vote is a pretty good one,” argues Michael Giltz in the Huffington Post.

Randall Lane crunched some numbers for the Daily Beast, finding that the finale “had all the makings of a red state/blue state proxy fight” and predicting “a decisive Lambert win—and a decided Lambert bias in Obama Country.” Of course, he was wrong—and changed the headline from “Why Adam Lambert Will Win Tonight” to “Why Adam Lambert’s Loss Is a Red State Victory,” Gawker points out.

The battle between an ambiguously sexual, theater-loving California glam rocker and a married-at-23, former church missionary Arkansas country rocker has all the makings of a Blue State/Red State culture war. - Randall Lane

Take that, Charles Darwin! Sometimes the survival of the fittest goes to the person with the best telephone prayer chain. Maybe, just maybe the one that appeals to the heartland more has the better shot. - Michael Giltz

Adam has an amazing voice, but I would much prefer to listen to Kris'. He won because he and his kind of music has more appeal... So I'd say the victory is for Kris, above all else.

You realize the Bible is a work of fiction don't you? The Bible also says: "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." Do you believe in that too?

I don't have TV or I might have tuned in to see the last show. I certainly wouldn't have wasted my time voting. All I saw were the photos of the 2 of them when the announcement was made. Adam seemed to accept his loss with such grace-- that was all I needed to know about him. It's obvious he's loved and admired by millions and I bet he has a great career ahead of him.
