(Newser) – The American who jeopardized Aung San Suu Kyi’s freedom by swimming to the lakeside home where she was under house arrest told the court yesterday he did so because he “had a vision” that Suu Kyi’s life was in danger, the Independent reports. John Yettaw planned to alert Suu Kyi, and hoped to post a video of the pro-democracy activist on YouTube, but she refused to be filmed or photographed, according to the Daily Mail.

Yettaw was nabbed with home-made flippers, makeshift floats, 331 photos, and a video of himself saying he believed "God was with him." Burmese authorities claim Yettaw's bizarre expedition was part of a conspiracy by "anti-government elements." A Burmese diplomat suggested that Yettaw is Suu Kyi's "boyfriend."
