(Newser) – Former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken finds this year’s runner-up, Adam Lambert, “slightly frightening.” Aiken trashed Idol in a post on his blog yesterday, Gawker reports, and Lambert did not escape unscathed. Aiken says he watches Idol only once a season, and “this year, I happened to turn it during the minute Adam Lambert was singing ‘Ring of Fire’ and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed.”

Most of Aiken’s ire, however, was directed at the show itself, which has, “for four years now, been more about the slick productions and polished contestants than it has been about finding the raw talent that it did in its first three seasons.” According to Aiken, fans are saying, “Enough with the pretension. More Rubens, more Clays, more Fantasias and Tamyras and Kellys please.”

Although I love Adam and amazed at the talent he has, I agree about how the American Idol format has changed. Perhaps, with Kris winning handily, America is trying to tell AI to go back to its original roots.
